About this feature: CDHA’s Spotlight Series celebrates recent graduates and scholarship recipients as they begin their professional journey.

What surprised you most about your first year after graduation?

How much I actually knew! Things came so naturally and fell into place better than I could’ve imagined. Being part of a great team allows me to feel supported and confident with my treatment for patients.

How did receiving the CDHA scholarship impact you?

It gave me financial support and a sense of belonging. Being a part of CDHA as a student felt small at times, but winning the scholarship made me feel seen — and supported. It gave me confidence.

What do you enjoy most about being a dental hygienist?

I have a true passion for oral health prevention. As hygienists, we do way more than “just clean teeth.” We make an impact and serve a community in a way that no one else can.

What advice would you give current dental hygiene students?

Keep pushing, use your voice, be confident but also open to learning as much as you can! If it was easy… everyone would do it.

How do you continue learning and stay inspired?

I follow many dental hygienists who have a social media presence. They highlight topics hygienists are thinking about and provide a space to exchange ideas and knowledge.

Why is community or association involvement important to you?

Community involvement creates a voice for us. It creates conversation and allows us to make an impact as a whole. It helps us unite and not feel alone in topics that seem large.

What does Dental Hygiene Month mean to you?

Every single month is Dental Hygiene Month. We should celebrate our growth, professional accomplishments, dedication, and hard work all year long.
