Gina Drane
MEd, RDH
Gina Drane’s career demonstrates how a foundation in dental hygiene can grow into a professional life centered on patient care, public health, education, mentorship, leadership, and service.
A Career That Continued to Grow
Gina entered dental hygiene after making a career change while raising a young family. She enrolled at Cuyahoga Community College in 2000 and completed the dental hygiene program in 2004.
Her early career included more than a decade in private practice before she transitioned into public health. That move broadened her perspective on oral health, access to care, and the barriers many patients face when trying to receive dental services.
Rather than treating dental hygiene as a single destination, Gina continued building on that foundation through additional education, teaching, mentorship, and professional involvement.
Clinical Practice
Gina spent more than a decade caring for patients in private practice, building the clinical foundation that would continue to inform the rest of her career.
Public Health
Her work in federally qualified and nonprofit health settings exposed her to patients experiencing financial, language, cultural, and access barriers to dental care.
Education & Mentorship
Gina returned to higher education herself and later became an educator, helping dental hygiene students develop both clinical skills and confidence as they prepare to enter the profession.
Professional Leadership
Gina contributes her experience to the Cleveland Dental Hygienists’ Association through leadership and student engagement, helping connect future hygienists with the professional community around them.
A Career for the Books
Gina’s professional journey was featured in Best Practice: Dentistry, Business & Policy.
Many Paths. One Profession.
The feature traces Gina’s progression from dental hygiene student and private-practice clinician to public-health provider, educator, mentor, and association leader.
Her story also highlights an important part of dental hygiene that is sometimes difficult to capture in a job title: the relationships built with patients and students, and the opportunity to influence how they experience oral health care and the profession itself.
Inspiring What Comes Next
Gina’s career is a reminder that there is no single path through dental hygiene. Clinical care can become the foundation for work in public health, education, mentorship, leadership, advocacy, and service.
By sharing those experiences with students and fellow professionals, Gina continues to help others see possibilities for their own careers—and strengthens the dental hygiene community in the process.
